授業の概要
The focus in this course is not so much on academic preparation as on supporting the students as they navigate their way through their science classes (e.g. Plant Id, Propagation, and Forestry). We try to fit as much ESL practice as we can into the remaining class time, sometimes matching grammar/notions to the content of their science courses. We cover such topics as parts of speech, sentence structure, basic verb tenses, simple paragraphs, and useful functions for life in Nanaimo/Canada (e.g. asking directions, asking for information, ordering…). We visit other ESL classes on a semi-regular basis for conversation practice, and one of the classes engages in language and cultural exchanges with Canadian students who are learning Japanese. The ESL instructors use Blackboard to communicate with the students and to stay abreast of what is going on in the students’ Science classes. Since we have begun to use Blackboard to communicate with our students, we have almost eliminated problems with students making errors around meeting times and places etc.
到達目標
PTSE classes are composed of students of mixed levels in terms of their English language abilities. Two classes from Tamagawa University in Tokyo are reconfigured to form Groups A and B in our program. Most of the students are at a high beginner to low-intermediate level, in terms of their communicative abilities in English.
