授業の概要
A Liberal Arts approach (リベラルアーツアプローチ) becoming aware that understanding news stories depends on understanding the core areas of a liberal education, including:
--language, literature, history, science, the Arts, sociology, psychology, politics and government, and religion.
リベラル教育の中心となる領域への視野を通して、ニュース内容を理解することへの気付きを高める、この領域とは、すなわち、言語、文学、歴史、科学、芸術、社会学、心理学、政治、行政、宗教などである。

The course will help students to become more aware of the world become more fluent in English focus on reading and listening comprehension,
critical thinking and problem solving,
discussion and presentation skills realize how language is used and misused realize how mass media is used and misused by various groups develop a critical stance towards mass media; recognize facts, interpretation, and values

このセミナー受講生は 世界をより広く知る 英語が上達する 特に、読解力、聴解力、批判的*思考法、問題解決、討議、発表などの能力を高める いかに言語が使用されているか、場合によっては適切でない形で使用されているかを学ぶ いかにマスメディアが使用されているか、場合によっては適切でない形で使用されているかを学ぶ マスメディアについて、批判的*な立場を発展させる 事実、翻訳、価値観などについて学ぶ

*「critical」の日本語訳は「批判的」ですが、この語のイメージから湧く「否定する」「難癖をつける」といった意味とは若干違います。うのみにせずに、冷静で客観的な思考力を鍛えることを、批判的思考法といいます。
到達目標
Student will select news items of interest to them and prepare for class by
researching additional background information of the issue or event processing and interpreting the data reflecting on how mass media deals with the issue thinking critically about the issues / events proposing questions for further reflection

Assessment will be over both in-class engagement and participation and out-of-class preparation.
