Public opinion polls are widespread in our daily lives. ‘Scientific’ research surveys are quite common in the academic world as well as in business and government. Polls can actually form opinion; some people look to them to decide who and what to believe. Understanding how polls and surveys are created, used and abused is an important part of a Liberal Arts education.

In this course, students will not only learn about surveys but will create their own on a topic of their own choosing. This is the 60th anniversary of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Students will be asked to focus on one or more of these human rights for their research topic.
This course will emphasize collaboration, with other students and with the teacher, thinking critically in order to create and revise the survey questions so that the language is appropriate and accurate. The survey will be given, the data collected and then interpreted and presented in a final presentation.
Students will be asked to look at the status quo, question it, and become active participants; not merely adapt to the world as it is. The focus is on Culture and Communication through a Problem- Posing Approach adapted from the Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire.
