授業の概要
This is a communication-based class in which students are expected to initiate communication and to participate willingly, and even joyously, at times. The focus of the lesson is on Language Awareness; helping learners develop a deeper and broader awareness of the nature of the English language and how fluent speakers of English view the underlying meaning or use of a word, phrase or grammatical structure.
In addition, Critical Thinking skills will be modeled and learners given many opportunities to explore and practice critical thinking of their own through classroom activities and homework tasks.

Outside the classroom, students will have many opportunities to put to use their Language Awareness and Critical Thinking skills, as learners will be expected to read independently out of class, choosing from a wide range of English Readers in the campus library. The goal is for students to become more comfortable, more fluent, and more skillful in thinking, reading, understanding and using English.

In order to accomplish those goals, the learners vocabulary knowledge and grammar skills must improve greatly. Activities to help students improve their vocabulary will always focus on vocabulary-in-context. Tasks for helping students improve their grammar skills will have a balanced focus on the three aspects of grammar - Form, Meaning and Function.

There will also be other reading activities in class and out of class. Students will read short selections and then answer comprehension questions. The purpose is not evaluation, but rather for students to assess their own level of comprehension and progress during this year course.

Through classroom activities and homework tasks, students will be encouraged to focus on fluency as well as accuracy. The goal of the focus on strategies is to develop their fluency and to help them monitor the accuracy of their English.
到達目標
This will be an ENGLISH-FIRST class. Students are expected to try to express their ideas in English. If and when truly necessary, students can switch into Japanese and say the part which they were unable to express in English. This English-First policy is for communication with the teacher and with other students.

By doing so, students will have a chance to :
....become aware of what good communication is
....develop a more positive attitude towards communicating in English
....practice appropriate behaviors, skills, and strategies.

Together we will practice communication strategies which will allow learners to ' stay in English ‘ even in unexpected situations not ' practiced ' before. There will be a challenging but supportive atmosphere in this course for students who are not confident in the fluency or accuracy of their spoken or written English.

Both the support and the challenge are present because the main goals of the course are quite simple, as well as quite empowering for the learner :

* Understand what others say... by using various strategies
* Communicate your idea ... by using a wide range of strategies
* Help others to understand and communicate.

The main activities of lessons will ask students to focus on :

* Independence - students learning and using English on their own.

* Interaction - students working with others.

* Integration - students using knowledge from other language studies in real communication situations

成績評価方法
Basic assessment procedure
成績は、各自の授業に対する意識や態度、言動、知識、スキルなどを総合して評価します。これには授業中の活動だけでなく、日々の宿題の提出状況なども視野に入れる予定です。また語彙や文章のまとめ等に関連したテストも行います。

Students will be assessed continually on their awareness, attitude, behavior, knowledge and skills. This is mainly done through observation by the teacher both in class during lesson activities and out of class through reading and correcting written homework. There will also be a written test covering vocabulary and grammar points. Students are also asked to evaluate their own attitude, effort, and classroom participation.
