授業の概要
This is a communication-based class in which reading and speaking are important in the classroom; as well as reading independently outside the classroom. The goal is to become more comfortable, more fluent, and more skillful in reading, understanding and using English.

Students will do activities in which they can practice reading strategies. With a partner, students will discuss what they read and have a chance to use the vocabulary and grammar that they found while reading.

Focus on Awareness and Fluency
Students will be encouraged to be more aware of their own reading style and comprehension ; making decisions as to how they would like to improve reading comprehension.

Focus on knowledge and accuracy
Students will acquire useful vocabulary and language structures through extensive reading for pleasure, through listening to English being spoken in the classroom, and through speaking English in the classroom.

Students will be given chances to understand how native speakers of English view the underlying meaning or use of a word or structure. Working with a partner, students will learn how to be a peer mentor when focusing on things like vocabulary and pronunciation.

Focus on strategies for improving skills
Students will be introduced to a range of activities in which they can practice reading strategies and skills that native speakers of English are introduced to when they are studying their native language in school The goal of the focus on strategies is to develop their fluency and to help them monitor the accuracy of their English.

PERSONAL LEARNING PROJECT - READING FOR PLEASURE

Students will be expected to Read for Pleasure each week. There are more than 1,000 English books in the Bungaku Library. The purpose of this activity is simple ; reading books which are not too difficult but are interesting. While students are Reading for Pleasure, they will have the chance to practice reading strategies which are introduced in class. The focus is becoming a more skillful reader ; understanding the intent of the writer , not just reading the words.

Students will be asked to keep a Response Journal about the books which they are Reading for Pleasure
The memos written in the journal might be questions or comments about vocabulary or grammar that the author of the book used. Some questions and comments might be personal ones - about themselves and their lives.

Some of the reading will be done on Tamagawa Blackboard as there are audio files and PDF of books. It is a good chance for students to practice listening and reading in a easy but effective way.

There will be weekly written homework. It usually focuses on language awareness. Students will need to spend 2 hours a week preparing for class and Reading for Pleasure.

There will also be reading activities in classs. Students will read short selections and then answer comprehension questions. The purpose is not evaluation, but rather for students to assess their own level of comprehension and progress during this year course.

(Maintaining and using a portfolio)】
● この授業ではテキストを使用しません。その代わりに、毎授業ごとにプリントを配りますので、各自責任を持って保管し、授業や自宅学習で大いに活用してください。返却された宿題も一緒に管理しておくといいでしょう。

This will be an ENGLISH-ONLY class; speaking English both in Pair Discussions and when interacting within the larger group.

It is important and interesting to talk about yourself , express your opinions as well as find out the ideas and opinions of others. One can do that in the classroom with non-native speakers. In this class, you will be asked to speak English, both during discussions with a partner and when interacting within the larger group. You will have a chance to :
....become aware of what good communication is
....develop a more positive attitude towards communicating in English
....practice appropriate behaviors, skills, and strategies.

Together we will practice communication strategies which will allow them to ' stay ' in English even in unexpected and situations you have not ' practiced ' before. There will be a challenging but supportive atmosphere in this course for students who are not confident in the fluency or accuracy of their spoken English.

The main goals the course are :

* Understand what others say
* Communicate your idea
* Help others to understand and communicate.

The main activities of lessons will ask students to focus on :

* Independence - students learn and use English on their own.

* Interaction - students work with others.

* Integration - students use knowledge from other language studies in real communication situations
