授業の概要

Introduction to Literature (Bridge Program/AEP). Through the reading and analysis of selected pieces of fiction, poetry and drama the students are introduced to the principles of literary analysis and appreciation. This course will improve the student’s linguistic skills and knowledge of language use in context and provide an expanded range of vocabulary. The students will be involved in experiencing, interpreting and evaluating literature.

到達目標

The student will read different literature genres using analytical thinking in processing the readings. Class time is mainly used for discussing the readings students do outside of class. Students are expected to do a lot of reading, and in addition, to use outside sources in helping them to understand the different literature explored in this class. Many films will also be utilized in this class.

第1回目	Introduction	Reading Literature: The pleasures of different forms of literature. What does it mean to understand literature through experience, interpretation and evaluation?
第2回目	The Short Story	Introduction to reading short fiction and types of short fiction. Discussion of the elements of fiction, plot, structure and character.
第3回目	The Short Story	Elements of fiction: Setting, point of view, language and style.
第4回目	The Short Story	Elements of fiction: Theme, irony and symbolism.
第5回目	The Short Story	Putting all the elements of fiction together to interpret short stories.
第6回目	Poetry	Introduction to reading poetry and to different types of poetry. Discussion of the elements of poetry: voice (speaker and tone), diction, imagery.
第7回目	Poetry	Elements of poetry: figures of speech, symbolism and allegory, syntax and sound (rhyme, alliteration, assonance.)
第8回目	Poetry	Elements of poetry: rhthym and meter, structure (closed form and open form), theme
第9回目	Drama	Types of drama: tragedy and comedy.
第10回目	Drama	Elements of drama: plot, character and dialogue.
第11回目	Drama	Elements of drama: staging and theme.
