授業の概要

Advanced English Grammar (Bridge Program/AEP I). This course provides a review of grammar and the mechanics of writing. The objective of the course is to refine students' existing grammar skills and to enable them to handle more complex grammatical structures. The course provides practice in both writing and speaking of the different grammatical structures studied, and the exercises completed stress students' critical thinking skills. The variety of exercises aims at improving the students' overall communicative competence, so that they are able to handle various communication situations. The format of the class includes explanation of the grammar points and various exercises practicing the relevant grammar point. After each topic there will be a practice exam to assess the students' comprehension.

到達目標

This class reviews grammar structures already learned by the students in the previous years. In addition, more complex grammar structures will be introduced and practiced. The students are expected to complete grammar exercises from the book as well as supplements provided by the teacher. In addition, the students are expected to use the same grammar points in their writing assignments for other classes. Speaking activities will also be provided to enable the students to practice the grammar points in both written and spoken communication.

第1回目	Tense Review	Review of the English tense system: present time, past time and future time. Discussion and practice of adverbial time expressions.
第2回目	Tense Review	Continuation of review of the English tense system: past perfect, past perfect continuous, future continuous, future perfect and future perfect continuous.
第3回目	Tense Review	Exercises and further practice of all the tenses above and discussion of how your choice of tense must correctly express the activities and feelings of the situation.
第4回目	Coordination	Coordinating conjuctions and parallel structures in English. Practice in connecting complete sentences and connecting more than two sentences.
第5回目	Coordination	Correlative conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs. Practice in connecting similar structures.
第6回目	Subordination	Adverb clauses and building sentences with adverb clauses. Discussion of reduction of adverb clauses.
第7回目	Subordination	Adjective clauses and discussion of necessary versus unnecessary adjective clauses. Reduction of adjective clauses.
第8回目	Subordination	Noun clauses with special attention to noun clauses beginning with that. Discussion of subjunctive form of the verbs in noun clauses.
第9回目	Passive Voice	Review of the passive voice and discussion of the forming and using of the passive.
第10回目	Conditional Sentences	Future real vs. present/future unreal. Past unreal.
第11回目	Conditional Sentences	Mixed conditional sentences.
第12回目	Conditional Sentences	Further practice of conditional sentences.
第13回目	Verbals: Infinitives.	Introduction to infinitives in English and discussion of different functions of infinitive phrases.
第14回目	Verbals: Infinitives and Gerunds	Futher practice of different functions of infinitive phrases. Introduction of gerunds in English.
