授業の概要
This course is designed for students who are interested in understanding other
cultures in relation to their own and in the process of communicating with
those other cultures.
The course begins by defining the basic terminology associated with inter-
cultural communication. The course goes on to explore characteristics of
different cultures - not only cultures in different countries and societies but
also cultures within smaller groups like family and friends. The course further
explores what communication involves and how perception, world views, values,
verbal and non-verbal messages affect communication.
During this course students will learn to understand their own culture and will
be able to objectively compare it to other cultures around them. The students
will also gain an understanding of why culture and communication are so tightly
linked. A variety of materials will be used during the course including readings,
documentaries and movies.
到達目標
Difficult reading assignments will be assigned to the students weekly, and the students are expected to read and make sense of them mostly at home. Since the content is often very difficult, the students are expected to be asking lots of questions in class. Thinking is the main tool for this class, and students are expected to think deeply and analytically about many topics about their culture as well as other cultures around the world. A final written research project requires the students to do lots of outside research and to use their academic writing skills learned in other classes. Active participation is vital to show the students' understanding of the difficult topics covered in this class.
