structures of written English. Out-of-class readings include both ESL and authentic material.

Writing:Chap.5,6&7
Goals:Students practice writing through the use of journals and responses to readings with attention to paragraph and essay
structure.Students are introduced to academic writing,e.g.short essays,library reports,definitions,etc. Attention is drawn
to discourse structures in various types of writing.

Tasks:narration;argument
Skills:organizing ideas using details;brainstorming;keeping to the subject;topic sentences;concluding sentences
Strategies:omitting digressions;punctuation;developing paragraph format
Listening&Speaking:Chap.5&6
Goals:Students focus on functional language use in relation to topics and situations found in core texts. Students are also
introduced to oral presentation skills related to familiar topics. Listening is further practiced out of class with both
graded ESL material and authentic material.

Tasks:role-play;verbal survey;short speech;discussion on the topics
Skills:asking for,granting,and denying a favor;saying you don't understand
