授業の概要
      This is a new course in communication aimed at introducting Japanese students to international discussion. There are five basic parts:1,The six fields of discourse (psychological,sociological,political-economic,cultural,ideological,ecological;2,The five methods of analysis(comparison,contrast,process,cause,effect)3,The essentials of logical style(introduction,support,thesis,controlling idea,topic sentence,concluding statement); Content(topics to presented as videos and lectures by teacher). There is no text-all items were written by the teacher. The rest are multi-media presentation or class lectures.

      Self Introductions
          Self Introductions. Each student will fill our an attendance-grade card which will be used to grade conversations,record homework and attendance for final grades. On the front of the card please write a cloze-introduction.       Comparison functions
          Comparison functions:checking of homework. Interactive communication using wh-homework questions. Introduction to comparison functions. In-class short essay about family comparisons. In-class check Homework:Bring family pictures and five questions about your family similarities.

      Contrastive functions
          Contrastive functions;Checking of homework;Conversation about family similarities Introduction to contrastives. Students copy contrastives and then write in-class paragraph about family contrasts,using all of the ten listed functions. In-class check. Homework:write ten questions about family differences using checked paragraph as base.

      Common mistakes and process
          Common mistakes and process. Checking of homework. Conversation about family difference. Introduction to Japanese common mistakes. Short quiz. Process connectors.
          Homework:change incorrect daily routine to your correct daily routine.

      Reported speech and process
          Reported speech and process. Checking of homework. Conversation on daily routine. Time-grid game contrasting:future,presenet and past,using temporal connecters.
          Conversation will be graded. Introduction to reported speech. Homework:transform five questions and answers of first homework assignment into reported speech format.

      Intercultural English 1:definitions
          Intercultural English 1-definitions:Homework checked, Conversations=reported-speech telephone conversation. introduction to cross-cultural definitions through game. In-class selection of Japanese term to define. Homework:write up cross-cultural defination.

      Intercultural English 2:process
          Intercultural English 2:process. Homework checked;revolving conversations about Japanese topics. Sample handout(kyudo)about Japanese process,Review of process functions. In-class check selection of process(all students must have different selections). Brief Intro to basic presentation style:intro,theme,topic sentence and support. Homework:study a mystery to find motive and method.

      Introduction to cause and effect
          Introduction to cause and effect. Functions:connectors,conditionals,past perfect,functions of cause and effect. Complete a two part paper developing the motive and process of mystery. The structure will be explained in detail in class. You try to fill in the pieces.

      Introduction to the four types of analysis and related questions
          Introduction to the five types of analysis and related questions, First Content lesson. Homework checked. Class discussion. You will be given a short lecture followed by a video. I will grade your notes the next class,Homework:write six question-one from each of the categories about either the lecture,video,or both.

      Introduction to the six fieles of discourse
          Introduction to the six fields of discourse. Homework checked. Class discussion. Lecture on the six fields of discourse and sample questions: psychology,sociology,political-economics,culture,ideology,ecology. Twenty-minute video demonstating some of the above. Homework:rework notes to be checked and graded. Write three field questions and answers.

      Introduction to Logical style
          Introduction to Logical style. Homework checked, Conversation. The basic elements of logical discussion will be presented: Introduction (lead-in,concessive,thesis(controlling ideas));topic sentence, support(the six types);conclusion(lead-out,concluding statement). Homework:work up notes for checking and grading.

      First International College lecture
          First International College lecture. A fifty minute multi-media lecture will be presented. Students are to take notes and write up five questions and answers from the five domains.
          Use the five types of analysis and present in a logical style. I will grade these very carefully since this class is the first of a three part series to make sure you understand the course goals.

      General critique of homework and introduction to western-style seminar discussion
          General critique of homework an d introduction to western style seminar discussion. I will try to cover the weak areas in the homework and then present multi-media lecture part two. The final homework will be to rewrite last week's homework.
第14回目
      Five-minute western style seminar discussion
          Fifty-minute western style seminar discussion. In this class you should ask and answer questions about the previous lecture topic making use of the six fields of discussion,five analysis types,and logical style. Bring note books for final late grading. NO HOMEWORK.
第15回目
      Attendance-grade consultation(last clss)
          Attendance-grade consultation(last class). You should have about fifteen to thirty grades on your card so there is no need for a test. While the class watches a video,I will individually call each student for attendance,grade and late homework consultation.
          Cumulative class evaluation(range and mean)will be given in the last ten minutes,so students will hage a good idea about what grade they will receive for the course. Later,low or high grades will be the effects of weighing the scores of the class with other classes.

成績評価方法
Grading is vased on class work. Each student is to keep a note book that will be graded each class. By the end of the semester you should have from fifteen to thirty grades. There is no need for a test since there will be more than enough grades by the end of the semester to get a good evaluation of progress. This is not an easy class,but it promises to well prepare you for you future university education here or aborad.
