Purpose of the course:To improve reading comprehension abilities with special emphasis on acquiring skills of analysing and composing basic English structures.

Themes of lessons: As described in the contents page of the textbook.

Skills to be studied:
1.Predicting
2.Skimming
3.Scanning
4.Detailed reading
5.Guessing unknown words
6.Understanding main ideas
7.Inferring
8.Understanding sentence and text organisation
9.Enriching vocabulary

Rate of units to be covered: 1 unit per 2-3 classes

Activities in the class:
(1)Vocabulary check for the reading passage(“readiness test”:7-8 items)
(2)Comprehension questions for the outline(“readness test”:2-3 items)
(3)Tasks,including oral activities
(4)Comprehension questions(“summary test”:5 items)

成績評価方法
Evaluation(approximate):
      a.Readiness tests:20%
      b.Summary tests:30%
      c.Final exam:40%
      d.Other tasks:10%

      Attendance:Compulsory

      Absenteeism and tardies:
      a.Anyone who comes after the attendance check is a late attendant.
      b.Anyone who comes more than 20 minutes late is considered absent.
      c.Anyone who does not respond immediately to the teacher's call is considered absent.
      d.Committing three late arrivals is equivalent to one absence.

      Bonus:
      Anyone who participates actively in the class activities(eg.volunteers to answer questions)will get 2 extra points in the final evaluation.

      Evaluation of the class by the students:Opportunities will be provided at the end of the semester.
履修条件等
The students who take this class are selected by a proficiency test(or equivalent)and are thus notified before the first semester begins.
